Tapped Out:

The World Oil Demand Crisis

Forty years ago the world was made aware that relying on oil as our primary source of energy was perilous. During the 70’s the US imported 24% of its oil, today we import 70%. And though worldwide oil production in 2030 will be much the same as it was in 1980, worldwide population will have almost doubled. If the trend towards industrialization continues at today’s pace (and there is no reason to argue this), worldwide demand for oil will outpace worldwide production. A shortfall between demand and supply of 10 or 15% will cripple our oil dependent economies. International supply and demand dynamics have shifted yet we have done little to prepare for what was predicted.

We face a crisis we can no longer ignore yet with innovative strategies we can make this rough period much more palatable. But it won’t be cheap, it will require sacrifice and most importantly, it demands a united effort to assure our voices are heard and correct and positive action taken.

No one has the means to change our oil economy into an alternate energy resource economy today. There is no magic pill. We will require oil for years to come and we must assure that our supply remains steady and strong. But at the same time we must immediately harness all other resources so that dependence steadily decreases in the coming years. This includes but is not limited to developing alternative resources such as:

  • Natural gas
  • Nuclear
  • Solar
  • Geothermal
  • Hydrogen
  • Battery
  • Serendipitous discovery

But most important of all is that the world and we as a nation hear the truth as clearly as possible so that we make rational and well thought out decisions. For too long what little energy policy we have had has been run by lobbyists and knee-jerk political decisions.

We propose a feature documentary film that examines the problem in a straight talking rational discussion that assesses the pros and cons of the choices available. We will talk with leading experts, in the energy field, economist and thought leaders to hear their ideas while disclosing their ties to industry that most influence their opinions. The work will be well suited for national release and television broadcast.

Timeliness is key. The issue is media hot and the need for action is now.
